Teaching in Dulce

Dulce Schools teachers are a dedicated group of individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds. Some have stayed in Dulce for many years, while some teach only a year or two. Their caring, insight and varied backgrounds provide a constant influx of information and new culture into the Dulce community. The community appreciates the effort and kindness that each of them brings to the school and the students every year.

dulce-roadDulce provides a unique rural environment for teaching to take place. As teacher Tamra Tiong points out, “Dulce Schools is unique in that everyone knows each other and no one flies solo. Nearly every child in the school has brothers, sisters and cousins in the classroom next door or down the hall, providing a network of support that is rare in many other parts of the country.”

As part of the Dulce curriculum, the Jicarilla language is taught in the classroom starting in elementary school. This teaching provides a continued link between the New Mexico sponsored classrooms and the Jicarilla tribe that it serves. It is also evidence of an interest and sincerity in continuing the Jicarilla culture from one generation to the next.

teacher-housing-2Many of the instructors choose to live in the teacher housing, located within walking distance of both the middle school and the high school, and a three-mile bike ride from the elementary school. Housing is provided at a reasonable cost and many options are available. One-, two- and three-bedroom units are available. Some are stand-alone and some are duplexes. The homes are convenient enough for one and large enough for a teacher’s whole family.

The community of Dulce Schools teachers is a key part of the ongoing success of the Dulce School system.
